The RIVERALERT project addresses a great challenge for both countries to establish an operational and sustainable telemetric water and sediment quantity monitoring system for water directorates and civil protection authorities in the Strymon/Struma riverbasin.
The specific objectives of the project are:
1) establishment of network of compatible and inter-calibrated sensors able to transmit reliable and compatible water and sediment quantity data following standardised methodology with common specifications, implementing article 8 of WFD,
2) development of common floods and erosion risk assessment software tools to civil protection in the riverbasin while implementing Floods Directive and Desertification Convention, and
3) establishment of cross-border supportive infrastructures (Decision Rooms) for fast joint response reactions to ensure the functioning of the system while providing reliable data process for risk assessment.
