Περίληψη

This is a brief review of the present state of wetlands in Greece and Canada and the trends over the last few decades. The state and changes in the wetlands of the delta of the Axios, Loudias and Aliakmonas rivers in Northern Greece and the Amvrakikos Gulf in Western Greece are discussed. In Canada the wetlands of the Great Lakes and those of Nova Scotia and British Columbia are examined. A comparison is also made between the two countries, regarding the current health of wetlands and the protocols and programs that are in place to restore the health and sustainability of the wetlands. Based upon the available data, it is shown that the current levels of activities aimed at restoring the sustainability of wetlands is comparable in Greece and Canada.
